Celebrating the Era of the Wave Man
A Tribute to the Modern Ronin
The Ronin emerged during a turbulent period in ancient Japan - an era when the long-standing stability of the Samurai and their lords was shattered by war and political upheaval. The collapse of the old order left many Samurai masterless, forced to navigate a new, uncertain world without the clear structure they once knew. They became known as 浪人, or “wave men,” drifting with the tides, adapting to survive and thrive without the safety of their former allegiances.
Today, we live in a similarly disruptive era. Once-stable corporate careers are being reshaped by technology, restructuring, and new expectations of work. And much like those ancient “wave men,” modern solopreneurs must master adaptability, resilience, and self-direction as old guarantees fade and new possibilities emerge.
The Ronin were never simply swords for hire. Many still lived by 武士道 - the Samurai code - choosing integrity over convenience and craft over comfort. In the same way, modern independents choose clients and projects that align with their values. They pursue autonomy not as an escape, but as a commitment to doing meaningful work on their own terms.
Being a “wave man” today means embracing uncertainty as the price of freedom. It is navigating change with courage, choosing impact over obligation, and carving out a way in a world no longer defined by fixed careers paths. It is a mindset enabled by a quiet confidence in one's experience reservoir.
This ethos fits naturally with the rise of portfolio careers. The idea of one job for life has given way to a more fluid reality: evolving stages, shifting identities, and the ability to blend expertise across roles, industries, and passions. Just as Ronin moved between different masters or missions, modern professionals cultivate a portfolio of projects that reflect who they are becoming - not just the title on their last name card.
So who thrives as a modern Ronin?
Often, it’s the seasoned or mid-career professional, someone who has built deep expertise, strong networks, and a growing desire for autonomy. Some choose this path deliberately. Others arrive here through disruption - retrenchment, burnout, or organizational change. But the ones who flourish share a familiar set of traits: resilience, adaptability, and the desire to steer their own course in uncertain waters.
I speak from experience. After years in corporate life, I reached my own crossroads, ready for a different kind of challenge. Embracing the wave man spirit was a leap into the unknown but also a return to purpose. A movement from being shaped by the system to shaping my own path through it.
If you’re feeling unmoored in this age of change, know this: you might not be drifting. You might be transitioning into your next chapter.
To all who choose this road, you carry forward a timeless legacy.
Ride the waves boldly.
You are the architects of the future of work.
